Boxthorn (Lycium ferocissimum) is a spiny, woody shrub that grows into dense thickets, excluding almost all other vegetation. Its sharp branches entangle seabirds, sometimes fatally, and its toxic berries pose a risk to native wildlife. Highly tolerant of harsh coastal conditions, boxthorn can quickly overtop native plants, becoming the only shrub in an area if left unchecked.

Fortunately, boxthorn is still only found in isolated bushes. Our goal is to keep it that way by acting quickly when plants are found. Contractors are trained to identify and remove boxthorn wherever it appears, helping us prevent it from gaining a strong foothold in our dunes, cliffs, and coastal shrublands.
