The Minimac gecko is a small to medium-sized nocturnal gecko belonging to the Woodworthia group, often referred to as the “rock” or “common” geckos. As their name suggests, these geckos are closely associated with rocky environments.

They can be found across a range of habitats – from coastal boulder beaches to alpine zones where they shelter among screes, talus slopes, and rock outcrops. Their distribution includes Marlborough, north-east Nelson, and northern Canterbury, with an additional population on the western coastline of Wellington.

Minimac geckos are viviparous (live-bearing), giving birth to one or two young between February and March. They are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of invertebrates as well as the nectar, fruit, and berries of native plants.

Unfortunately, mammalian predators pose a serious threat to these geckos throughout their range.
