Taupata (Coprosma repens) is one of the most common tree species along the Limestone Coast. Taupata has thick, oval-shaped leaves with an almost plastic feel, shiny green on the upper surface and matte cream/green underneath. At the beach, the leaves are often partly rolled up to reduce their surface area, which helps prevent moisture loss caused by the wind. Taupata is wind-pollinated, and plants are usually either male or female (dioecious), rather than bearing both sexes on the same plant. Clusters of bright orange berries, which are attractive, appear on female plants during the warmer months.
