New Zealand native sea holly (Eryngium vesiculosum) is a low-growing, creeping perennial that forms patches in coastal turf or pebble environments, and is also found in some freshwater lake areas. The common name “sea holly” comes from its resemblance to true holly and its coastal habitat, along with its often bluish or silvery-blue colour. The plant faces threats from habitat loss due to agriculture and competition from introduced weeds.
